Former President Abdulla Yameen was elected president of the People's National Front unopposed at the party's inaugural national assembly held in October 2025. The assembly, attended by over 3,000 delegates at the Dharubaaruge convention centre in Malé, also elected Yameen's son Zain Abdulla Yameen and former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed as the party's two vice presidents.

The PNF, registered in mid-2025 after Yameen's acrimonious split from the Progressive Party of Maldives, has rapidly grown its membership to over 18,000 registered members. The party's founding charter positions it as a centre-right nationalist movement focused on 'economic sovereignty and Maldivian-first development,' a platform designed to appeal to voters disillusioned with both the ruling PNC and the opposition MDP.

Yameen used his keynote address to launch a blistering attack on President Muizzu, whom he accused of 'betraying the mandate that was given to free me and restore justice.' He outlined a vision for the 2028 presidential race centred on renegotiating Chinese debt terms, reversing what he called the 'fire sale of national assets,' and restoring large-scale infrastructure development.

Political observers note that the PNF's family-centric leadership structure carries both advantages and risks. While it ensures tight organisational discipline and message control, critics argue it reinforces perceptions of Yameen's autocratic tendencies that contributed to his 2018 electoral defeat. The party's ability to attract experienced political operators beyond the Yameen inner circle will likely determine its viability as a serious contender in 2028.
