Dhiraagu Expands 5G Network to Six Additional Atolls, Bridging the Digital Divide

Dhiraagu, the Maldives' leading telecommunications provider, announced the expansion of its 5G network to six additional atolls as part of its nationwide digital connectivity programme. The rollout covers Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, and Baa atolls, bringing high-speed mobile internet to communities that previously relied on limited 4G or even 3G connections.

The expansion is particularly significant for remote island communities where physical infrastructure is limited. 5G connectivity enables telemedicine consultations with specialists in Malé, distance learning programmes for students in outer atoll schools, and access to digital government services that previously required travel to the capital.

Dhiraagu CEO Ahmed Maumoon stated that the company aims to achieve nationwide 5G coverage by the end of 2027, with investments exceeding MVR 500 million in network infrastructure. The rollout complements the government's broader digital transformation agenda, which includes plans for a national digital identity system and e-governance platform.

The telecoms sector in the Maldives faces unique challenges due to the country's geography — 1,192 islands spread across 90,000 square kilometres of ocean. Submarine fibre optic cables and satellite backhaul are required to connect atoll base stations, making per-capita infrastructure costs among the highest in the world.
